If you are a homeowner who pays yearly taxes in the United States then you might know that there are a multitude of costs that you can deduct from your gross income to reduce your taxed income and save money each year. You probably won?t be able to deduct the entire amount, but rather, you would have to deduct a portion of the cost in proportion to how much your business and home share the same space. This is just one of the many possible deductions you can use if you truly operate your business from your home. A while ago tax courts ruled that if you operate your own business and meet clients regularly at your house you may be able to deduct a portion of your landscaping bills as a business expense because it makes your business more likely to succeed.
Swimming pool tax deduction ? Tax rules state that in some cases a portion of the costs to put in a pool can be deducted from your taxes if there is a solid health-related reason to use a pool. In one case a gentleman with low lung capacity used a swimming pool to exercise and increase his breathing strength. Since he used the swimming pool more than his family he was allowed to deduct part of the costs as a medical expense. These deductions are essential to keep in mind if you are applying for a pool loan because they can change how much you should spend. Other medical devices for the house such as elevators for wheelchairs may also qualify for a deduction. You should also know that the Internal Revenue Service considers a swimming pool and a spa to be the same thing.
Tax credits for new doors ? Select Energy Star entry doors that meet certain energy efficiency criteria are eligible for a tax credit of up to 30% of the cost of the door with a maximum tax credit of $1,500. If you are going to install new doors this year, make sure they meet the minimum requirements for this tax deduction. Remember that the doors are eligible but the labor required to install them is not eligible.
To be sure that you are deducting everything you can, you will want to take copious notes, take plenty of photos and obviously keep all your receipts for every possible home improvement expense. If you?re planning on finishing some home upgrades this year, you should really investigate the possible tax deductions that might be available! Not all home improvements are eligible for tax deductions, but with a little research you can definitely save some money on your income taxes and upgrade your home at the same time. The rules for income tax deductions are always changing, so it may be helpful to speak with a qualified tax expert about your home improvements to find out of you are eligible for some of these special credits.

KABUL (Reuters) - Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Friday lashed out at the United States for failing to fully cooperate with an investigation into the massacre of 16 Afghan villagers by a U.S. staff sergeant and questioned whether only one soldier could have been involved.
A series of blunders by the United States, including the killings in Kandahar province on Sunday and the inadvertent burning of copies of the Koran at a NATO base last month, has further strained already tense relations between the countries.
"This has been going on for too long. You have heard me before. It is by all means the end of the rope here," Karzai told reporters at the heavily fortified presidential palace.
Flanked by senior officials, a tired and sometimes angry Karzai listened to village elders and the families of victims of the massacre, and dressed somberly in black for the start of an expected two days of talks to discuss the killings.
Some at the meeting shouted, some demanded answers, but all said they wanted any soldiers involved punished.
"I don't want any compensation. I don't want money, I don't want a trip to Mecca, I don't want a house. I want nothing. But what I absolutely want is the punishment of the Americans. This is my demand, my demand, my demand and my demand," said one villager, whose brother was killed in the nightime slaughter.
Furious Afghans and lawmakers have demanded that the soldier responsible be tried in Afghanistan, but despite those calls, the U.S. staff sergeant was flown out on Wednesday.
"The army chief has just reported that the Afghan investigation team did not receive the cooperation that they expected from the United States. Therefore these are all questions that we'll be raising, and raising very loudly, and raising very clearly," Karzai said.
Karzai appeared to back the belief of the villagers, and many other Afghans including the country's parliament, that one gunman acting alone could not have killed so many people, and in different locations some distance apart.
"They believe it's not possible for one person to do that. In (one) family, in four rooms people were killed, women and children were killed, and they were all brought together in one room and then put on fire. That one man cannot do," Karzai said.
TWIN INVESTIGATIONS
With twin investigations still underway by both U.S. and Afghan officials, any discovery of more than one soldier involved in the massacre would be a disaster for NATO, with Western leaders needing to win over Afghans ahead of a withdrawal by most foreign combat troops in 2014.
Civilian casualties caused by NATO forces hunting insurgents are a major source of friction between the Afghan government and its Western backers, and have damaged efforts to win the "hearts and minds" of locals in the decade-old war.
"Our families are finished and our houses are destroyed," said a furious Hajji Abdul Samad Aka, who lost 11 members of his family in the killings in two villages of Panjwayi district.
An unnamed U.S. official told The New York Times the attack by the accused soldier was a result of "a combination of stress, alcohol and domestic issues - he just snapped."
The lawyer for the soldier said the staff sergeant was upset at having to do a fourth tour of duty in a war zone and was likely suffering from stress after seeing colleagues wounded.
Anger over the massacre spilled into weekly Friday prayers at a major mosques in central Kabul with one cleric calling the shooting "unforgivable" and questioning how a soldier with alleged mental problems could be in the U.S. military.
"Revenge for the blood of these victims will be taken either today, tomorrow, in 10 years or the next 100 years," said Mullah Ayaz Niazi at Wazir Akhbar Khan mosque in Kabul's diplomatic enclave, which is also home to NATO headquarters.
The soldier accused of the shooting was attached to a small special forces compound similar to others around the country which underpin NATO's anti-insurgent strategy.
On Thursday, Karzai called for NATO troops to leave Afghan villages and confine themselves to major bases, underscoring fury over the massacre and clouding U.S. exit plans.
He also demanded the handover of security to Afghan police and soldiers by 2013, a year ahead of schedule.
Such a move could undercut U.S. President Barack Obama's strategy for Afghanistan and hamper efforts to mentor Afghan police and help with local governance.
In a further blow to NATO hopes of a negotiated end to the decade-old war, the Afghan Taliban said they were suspending nascent peace talks with the United States, following the massacre and ahead of the traditional summer fighting months.
The United States said it was committed to political reconciliation involving talks with the Taliban but progress would require agreement between Kabul and the insurgents.
"The Taliban leadership were and may still be serious about talks, but instead of discussing how to end the war, they will now be persuading the rank and file to go out again this year and fight," Kate Clark of the Afghanistan Analysts Network said.
"That another round of fighting and killing is now on the agenda is a difficult prospect to face," she wrote in a blog.

ScienceDaily (Mar. 14, 2012) ? A study by researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and The University of Minnesota indicates that a parent's weight change is a key contributor to the success of a child's weight loss in family-based treatment of childhood obesity. The results were just published in the advanced online edition of the journal Obesity.
"We looked at things such as parenting skills and styles, or changing the home food environment, and how they impacted a child's weight," said Kerri N. Boutelle, PhD, associate professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at UC San Diego and Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego. "The number one way in which parents can help an obese child lose weight? Lose weight themselves. In this study, it was the most important predictor of child weight loss."
Recent data suggests that 31 percent of children in the United States are overweight or obese, or between four and five million children. Current treatment programs generally require participation by both parents and children in a plan that combines nutrition education and exercise with behavior therapy techniques.
"Parents are the most significant people in a child's environment, serving as the first and most important teachers," said Boutelle "They play a significant role in any weight-loss program for children, and this study confirms the importance of their example in establishing healthy eating and exercise behaviors for their kids."
The researchers looked at eighty parent-child groups with an 8 to 12-year-old overweight or obese child, who participated in a parent-only or parent + child treatment program for five months.
The study focused on evaluating the impact of three types of parenting skills taught in family-based behavioral treatment for childhood obesity, and the impact of each on the child's body weight: the parent modeling behaviors to promote their own weight loss, changes in home food environment, and parenting style and techniques (for example, a parent's ability to help limit the child's eating behavior, encouraging the child and participating in program activities).
Consistent with previously published research, parent BMI change was the only significant predictor of child's weight loss.
The researchers concluded that clinicians should focus on encouraging parents to lose weight to help their overweight or obese child in weight management.

I was always a confident child. I have no idea why, but I always welcomed things as a challenge rather than as a problem. I always felt I had an excess of energy and if I never utilised every last drop it would become counter-productive, making me feel I would implode.
From the age of seven I threw myself into a variety of sports and also joined Cubs to find outlets for my boundless energy. My confidence continued to grow as I excelled in all my extracurricular activities, being recognised as the leader in all sporting situations.
By the time I started high school, my energy became a problem. I found it difficult to sit still and concentrate in class. My confidence made me feel comfortable playing up as a ?jack the lad?; amusing myself and others in class through disruptive behaviour to get through the boredom.
Recognising that school was moving too slow for my hyperactive yet intellectually adept nature, my parents searched for school-related activities that could absorb my energy and focus my mind. After trying the after- school drama and chess clubs, I eventually opted for the debating society.
Impromptu speaking cam natural to me. What I found difficult was having to write and prepare short speeches. Initially the research seemed tedious and my concentration was lacking. My parents supported me. I loved the adrenaline rush of having to think on my feet to back up counter arguments during a debate. I focussed on believing that if I never did my research properly and fully I would not have the ability to enjoy the thrill of impromptu speaking to defend myself against counter arguments.
This kept me engaged in school. I soon realised that the skills I gained from public speaking and the various public speaking subjects I researched helped me excel in the humanities, improving my concentration and enthusiasm whilst absorbing my energy.
Without public speaking my school studies would have suffered greatly. Public speaking for kids is a great activity and I strongly urge all parents to get their children involved.

"I hope it gives us jobs for everybody," said Vacheresse, 39, who last fall joined an apprentice scheme at a Wheeling, iron workers' labor union to learn how to work in steel construction. He made the move after watching layoffs erode the workforce at his machinist shop over 17 years. He expects his new skills will lead to a much higher-paying job building Shell's planned new $2 billion cracker, industry slang for a chemical plant.

According to new research from Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH), light-to-moderate alcohol consumption was associated with a lower risk of stroke in women.
The study will be electronically published on March 8, 2012 in Stroke, a journal of the American Heart Association (AHA).
Monik Jimenez ScD, BWH Department of Medicine, examined data from 83,578 female participants in the Nurses' Health Study. They looked at data of women who had no evidence of cardiovascular disease or cancer at baseline and followed them for up to 26 years. Participants provided information on diet, including self-reported alcohol consumption, lifestyle factors and stroke events.
There were 2,171 incidents of stroke: 1,206 were ischemic strokes, 363 hemorrhagic strokes, and 602 were of an unknown or probable type. An ischemic stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is blocked. A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel bursts in the brain.
Approximately 30 percent of women reported that they never drank alcohol, 35 percent reported very low levels of consumption, 37 percent drank moderately, and only 11 percent of women reported drinking more than the equivalent of one mixed drink per day on average.
In the study, low consumption was considered less than 4.9 grams daily (less than ? glass of wine per day). Moderate consumption was considered 5 to 14.9 grams daily (? to 1 ? glasses of wine, one serving of a mixed drink, or one beer).
After analyzing the data, the researchers saw that women who consumed low to moderate amounts of alcohol had a lower risk of total stroke compared to women who never drank. Higher levels of alcohol intake were not associated with reduced risk of stroke.
The researchers speculate on several scenarios that may explain alcohol's ability to reduce stroke risk. Alcohol may have components to prevent blood clots and cholesterol from building up in the arteries, both of which can lead to stroke. Higher levels of alcohol intake may increase the risk of high blood pressure and atrial fibrillation which are risk factors for stroke.
The study's findings support the public health message issued by AHA regarding alcohol consumption. AHA recommends that women and men who consume alcohol should do so in moderation. This means one drink per day for women and one to two drinks per day for men. The AHA defines one drink as: one 12-ounce beer, 4 ounces of wine, 1? ounces of 80-proof spirits, or 1 ounce of 100-proof spirits. Also, in light of the study findings, AHA cautions that people who abstain from alcohol should not start drinking due to the dangers associated with it (e.g., alcoholism).
