The importance of electronic commerce, also known as e-commerce, is essential for the country?s businesses, according to the latest report published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The study analyses how businesses are using Internet in different types of businesses across the UK, divided by size, sector, execution of purchases or sales and interaction with public authorities or other companies. The report shows that most of the businesses had a website (81 per cent) and over half of them (56 per cent) provided at least one member of the staff with a ?portable device? in 2011. E-commerce sales also increased last year compared to 2010.

The information revolution is evident. Not only has e-commerce changed our lifestyles but also it has improved the way companies do business, offering several advantages for the companies which use it. E-commerce is one of the cheapest methods as it is possible to reduce the cost of promotion of products and services. There is no barrier in?selling products as Internet arrives all over the world and, with just one click, it is easier to do transactions, purchases or sales any time anywhere. For this reason, its use is increasing every year.

Figures support this fact. According to the latest Annual Business Survey, e-commerce sales represented 19 per cent of total turnover in 2011, up from 18 per cent in 2010. Whereas in 2010 there were ?423.7bn e-commerce sales, the figures reached up to ?482.9bn in 2011. Websites sales also increased from 4.6 per cent in 2010 to 5.0 per cent last year.

The report also analyses e-commerce activity per sector, being manufacturing one of the sectors in which companies used Internet more often in order to carry out their activities, with ?149.3 of e-commerce sales.

Businesses people are also aware of the importance to do transactions even if employees are not in the office. For that reason, 56 per cent of the firms provided at least one worker with a ?portable device?, such as personal digital assistant (PDA) or smartphone (52 per cent of the businesses) or a portable computer (44.7 per cent). Most of them had Internet connection, with access to publicly available information on the Internet, access to the company?s email system and with the possibility to see and modify the business?s documents.

The Internet revolution is clearly having such an impact on our daily lives and businesses that surveys and official studies are analyzing the situation in order to know how businesses can improve their strategies to make more benefits and to save time while carrying out electronic commerce activity online. Technology in general and e-commerce in particular has become a key instrument in British companies which are already taking advantages of the network. With the proper devices, everything can be solved with one click of the mouse.
